10/17/2020 - The Diner, Mt. Pleasant, MI
Our second excursion was new to me. It is a place I have wanted to check out for quite some time as the parking lot to this restaurant is always packed. That is always a very good sign.
Located on North Mission, just north of Mt Pleasant is a little gem called "The Diner". We arrived to the location and struggled to find a place to park. People were standing outside on the porch of the diner, waiting their turn to get in.
We went inside and got our name on the waiting list. We waited about 10 minutes and our name was called. There was not an empty space in the restaurant once we were seated. Our waitress was pleasant and very attentive to our needs. After we ordered our food, I was able to surprise my dad with another attendee to our quest, my brother, Donovan.
We enjoyed our time together catching up and learning about my brother's new job. Our food arrived and we were pleasantly surprised. Everything was spectacular. I had ordered "Loaded Hash Browns" which was hash browns with ham, bacon and cheese. It also came with 2 eggs which I had scrambled. It was way too much for me to eat.
Dad had ordered the Farmer's Omelette. It had ham, potatoes, onions, green peppers and cheese all loaded into an omelette. Dad said it took him two days to eat the amount of food that they had provided. He made the comment "I guess I'm not a farmer anymore."
Donovan ordered the Breakfast Skillet which was hash browns cooked with onion, bacon and sausage, topped with cheddar cheese and 2 eggs. His meal also came with toast. Donovan stated that his breakfast was good, immediately filling. A hearty breakfast. There was enough that he took home the he ate the leftovers for 2 more meals!
Donovan's only comment on an improvement to this meal would be to add sausage gravy to it to tie it all together. He also stated that he was surprised at how generous this restaurant was with the meat. The portions received were above average.
My food was very good. The hash browns had both a bit of crunchy and not crunchy. The ham and cheese were good mixes into them. The bacon was okay. I personally prefer very crispy bacon, so I would have liked it to be a bit crispier, but it wasn't bad either. I would guess that it was probably perfect for most people.
We found the coffee here to be a bit better than the coffee at our last restaurant. But to be honest, it still lacked the rich flavor that I prefer in my coffee.
This is another place that we may try to come to again in the future. Just be ready to eat as the portion sizes here are quite large.
